It’s no secret that a nutritious, wholesome diet can go a long way in promoting optimal health and longevity. However, you may be wondering which foods can be most beneficial for brain health. As such, I would like to highlight five superfoods which can ensure your brain is firing on all pistons with the nutrients it needs. These superfoods contain a variety of potent nutrients which protect the body and brain by fighting inflammation and supporting vital communication between brain cells.

Five Superfoods for Brain Health

  1. Wild Salmon – The omega-3 oils concentrated in fish such as salmon lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including heart attacks and strokes. This includes DHA – which has been found to be the most important fat in the human brain.
  1. Broccoli – Broccoli is loaded with vitamin K, vitamin A, carotenoids, folic acid and iron, making it a nutritional powerhouse. It also has strong detoxifying properties, due to its potent anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting enzymes.
  1. Watermelon – Watermelon provides a lot of nutrients for very little calories. It contains lycopene and potassium, and even has 1/3 of your daily dose of vitamin A and C in about 40 calories per cup. It also contains vitamin B6, amino acids, and lots of antioxidants!
  1. Butternut Squash – Loaded with fiber, butternut squash also gives us a sizable dose of vitamins A and C. Additionally, it is also an excellent source of potassium – it has more than a banana! Its bright orange color signals rich amounts of carotenoids, which are known to protect the heart.
  1. Leafy Greens – It’s no surprise that these green foods are great for us and offer a rich variety of essential nutrients including magnesium, calcium, and folate. Spinach, kale, turnip greens, and collards are all great choices – and don’t forget that the darker the green, the more nutritious it is.
